There are still large areas filled with Japanese houses in various states of use and disuse. The most convenient and straightforward way to get to Taitung from Taipei is by the local train 台鐵 managed by TRA. The long ride from Taipei will take 4-5 hours and you can enjoy gorgeous views of the ocean and mountains during the stretch between Hualien and Taitung. If you are taking the train from Taipei down to Taitung, select the seats on the left and seats on the right if you are travelling up from Taitung for unobstructed views of the ocean. ” – That’s the question and blank stares I usually get when I share that my favourite part of Taiwan is Taitung. Note that the Railway Village is quite a ways from the Taitung Train Station, so it’s best to get there by taxi or scooter, or on the Taiwan Tourism shuttle. If have more time in Taitung city, the city’s hippest attraction is Railway Art Village (鐵道藝術村, often abbreviated to 鐵化村 or Tiehua Village / tiehua cun). This is Taitung’s answer to Huashan Creative Park in Taipei, Cultural Heritage Park in Taichung, and Pier 2 Arts Center in Kaohsiung.
Visitors can see an irrigation ditch on the right side of the road with the water in the ditch flowing upward the higher side. In fact, because the two sides of the fish bridge are steeper than the road surface, it creates the feeling that the water flows back to a high place. The adventure starts with scaling the steep steps of the bridge that leads to a network of footpaths, seaside caves, potholes and rich fauna and flora. Taitung is situated on a small plain between the mountains and the ocean at the southern mouth of the East Rift Valley. This provides Taitung with not only spectacular scenery but also an ocean breeze that makes this tropical city surprisingly comfortable. Taitung was developed by the Japanese in the early part of the 20th century and they were responsible for the construction of the roads and railway to the area. This in turn brought an influx of Han Chinese settlers into the area that already had several indigenous groups, creating a diverse city of indigenous, Hakka, and Hoklo populations.
Despite the challenging journey up there, I recommend visiting at night for its breathtaking view. These outdoor arts villages frequently host live performances, concerts, and handmade markets. The coastal park highlights unique rock formations naturally created by marine erosion. If Yehliu has the Queen’s Head, Xiao Yehliu has mushrooms, tofu, etc. Lisong Hot Spring is a perfect destination for outdoor adventurers and hikers.
