Because the veneer is so thin, it exerts almost no stress on the timber core, and is too thin to undergo ‘Checking’. Additionally, if the floor is an Oak, the colour stain on the product will be eradicated. Engineered hardwood and engineered oak are both the same type of floor, which is engineered wood planks. The main difference is that Engineered timber flooring are made with Australian timbers such as Spotted Gum, whereas Engineered Oak flooring is made with European and American woods. When polyurethane Lacquer is applied on site, it is generally done in 2 thick coats. This forms a solid protective shield across the top of the timber and does not leave any sort of micro space for dirty humid air to be sucked down into and stain the ends of the boards. Additionally, while not really very popular in Australia, Oiling is a viable option.

Installation costs of engineered timber is also higher than laminate flooring as it is a little more complicated. Both floor’s main selling points include their abilities to retain an authentic timber look and feel, although laminate flooring is not made of real timber. In residential environments the expected lifespan of engineered wood flooring is around 30 years, whereas it is 15 to 25 years on average for laminate flooring. A common misconception is that higher grades constitute higher quality, which is completely untrue. The hardwood flooring grading system simply describes the level of features and variety in pattern on the floor boards.
