Embracing digital textbooks

Many students, and people in general, choose paper books instead of e-readers because printed text is not so hard on the eyes. Reading a back-lit screen is tiring for the eyes and can strain them. The symptoms include dry or watery eyes, blurred vision, difficulty focusing, sore neck and/or shoulders and light sensitivity.

For this reason, many schools and colleges around the world have made the  implementation of digital textbooks a central component of education policy. For example, in South Korea, reading materials in all public schools will be digitized by 2015. In the United States, the Federal Communications Commission aims for every student to be able to access e-texts by 2017. A digital textbook is a digital book or e-book intended to serve as the text for a class. Digital textbooks may also be known as e-textbooks or e-texts.

Finally, the DMI recognized the need for learners to engage in reflection as the primary means to integrate new information learned in the interactive digital texts. To accomplish this, multimedia elements and interactives were designed to offer the learner opportunities for guided reflection . In many widgets, learners are asked to reflect on the multimedia presentation or the interaction they have just experienced by answering guiding questions. These questions build on each chapter’s learning objectives and help to organize and contextualize recently learned information.

In addition, rented e-textbooks offer all of the benefits of the e-textbooks that have been purchased, and students do not need to worry about trying to resell the e-textbooks at the end of the semester. They simply return the rented e-textbook as per their rental agreement. College students can rent e-textbooks for whatever the duration they need – from 30 days to a full year at 360 days.
Under the American Forest Global ReLeaf program, Chegg.com has planted almost three million trees in locations all over the world, including Guatemala, Cameroon, and Lake Tahoe. Avoid placing them loosely in the box, since they can often get crushed during shipment. Avoid wrapping the textbooks in the newspaper, since the ink may transfer onto the textbooks during transit and damage the textbooks and lead to rejection. Similarly, pricing a book too low will certainly help you get rid of the textbook quickly, but you will earn far less money. Therefore, it is wise to research three or four sites and price your book in the medium-high range to generate a quick sale with the highest return. Avoid any undue use of the rented textbook, such as highlighting, folding pages, or making notes in the margins. Since the textbook is a rental, most companies expect the book to be kept pristine, and charges will apply if the textbook is returned in what the renter deems to be the poor condition. You will need to rent the book for the entire semester plus the exam period. Late fees apply if the rented textbook is not returned according to the original agreement.

One is that educators should not adopt and use these digital resources the same way as they might treat physical textbooks, because they have different characteristics. This can be one way to save some money on your college textbooks. If you take online classes, you are used to doing a lot of your work on the computer any way, and this is an easy transition to make. I understand the advantages of using them and can see that this will probably be the way of the future for many books. With the popularity of e-readers for reading books and newspapers, it only makes sense that this will be common for college textbooks also. Recently, Liu et al. used eye-tracking technology to study the online reading behavior of 52 advanced learners of English. In this study, the participants read electronic textbooks with six support features at the micro and macro level that included glosses, vocabulary focus, footnotes, illustrations, infographics, and photos. The results of the study showed that when participants were reading the electronic textbooks for learning vocabulary, vocabulary focus and glosses received significant fixations. However, in reading for text comprehension, the participants focused more on illustrations and visual aids. A number of studies in the literature explored different aspects of reading electronic textbooks on computer screens by university students, however, these studies reported conflicting results. Chou studied the screen reading behaviors of five graduate students from different disciplines over a period of one month.
TO reduce the amount of money they spend, they started the California Open Source Textbook Project. What this project does is it offers easy online and electronic access to open source textbooks. Because I teach digital cultural studies my courses can unify digital literacy instruction with course content, perhaps more than other subjects. For my purposes, having students create an open textbook on social media encouraged them to explore aspects of everyday culture that they often overlook. For instance, as a class they decided that the textbook should include a chapter on the terms of service for using Facebook, Instagram, Twitter and other popular social media platforms.
The text, images and lighting can be enhanced or diminished as necessary, and there is also the text-to-speech option which is great for students with visual disabilities. In addition, colors can be adjusted to suit the visual and cognitive needs of an individual. I purchased a textbook for a class earlier this year, 2021, and it did not function properly without adobe flash which has been EOL’d.
