Grammar School Brighton

As the eighth Headmaster of BGS, I acknowledge the legacy forged by those outstanding educators who came before me and the many achievements of our boys and staff over the years. The second ladder below shows the position of Brighton Grammar School when all schools are ranked by their 2021 VCE 40+ percentage measures, . If two schools have equal 40+ percentages, their 40+ score counts are used as a tie-breaker.
Members of our international parent community are invited to attend our International Parents’ Support Group morning tea on Wednesday 15 February. Easing back after the holidays can range from feeling really excited and eager to concern, fear or anxiety. Getting butterflies or general worry about going back to school is common. A friendly reminder to always sign your son in and out using our Qikkids system, and during Term 1 apply sunscreen on arrival ready for the day. A loving, quick and confident goodbye helps your son’s brain and body to adapt and reduce the fight or flight neurochemical reaction.

We have so many varied opportunities throughout the year where we see the warmth, direction and care our older boys provide to our younger boys. Thank you to Father Lord who led the service, Hayley Blakiston and Borwick House Choir for the superb singing and to the family members of our School Officers who supported their sons. Thank you to all the parents who participated in organising year level events, fostered relations with other parents, and supported the School and students on so many levels across 2022.
Last Friday, dozens of BGS boys were treated to a fun celebration of Chinese New Year in the Wellbeing Centre Library, hosted by Ms Ruth. It is traditional for Brighton Grammar Year 12s to begin their year with the Big Fella camp. The intention is to complement the physical challenge of hiking Mt Bogong with the mental challenge of goal-setting for the year ahead; approaches to learning, challenge, relationships and creativity are discussed and explored. Our Year 7s will head to the Mornington Peninsula either on 27 March or 2 April .

Our parent information sessions, business breakfast and workshops have been well-attended including a special community event with world-expert Prof Matt Englar-Carlson who led a talk on Positive Masculinity for over 400 attendees. Our youngest boys in the ELC are adapting to new routines of learning while our Year 12s are showing admirable commitment and focus to their studies. There were two matches conducted ACT Schools v Victorian Schools. These were played in great spirit and an atmosphere of camaraderie and good will. ACT won both matches however Victoria were within a try for most of the second match. ASRU selectors viewed the matches and will also view any matches held in other jurisdictions in the next months with a hope to select two representative teams for potential matches in September. After nearly two years without interstate representative matches between states this was welcome relief and a wonderful experience for all the players involved. Due to the continuing situation with the COVID19 pandemic and, the successive lockdowns being experienced by the community, the Victorian Schools Rugby Union has cancelled the remainder of the winter season 2021.

School officials and the Environment Protection Authority insist the former heavy industrial site does not pose an immediate danger to staff or students. The rowing teams are showing great promise and we look forward to hearing how our Year 10 team does in the Australian National Championships in WA this week. Last Saturday, I had the great pleasure of heading out of Melbourne to spend time at Nagambie Lakes to watch the Head of the River.
