If you are biking, it is about 90 kms from Hualien to Yuli. Take the Zhuofu Industry Road all the way to the 20A, then swing back to Guanshan on back roads, easily found on Google maps, then cross the 9 and head east of the 9 to the 197. The 197 is now paved along its length and is a lovely, almost empty road. Will involve some climbing if you are biking, but its much better than the 15 kms of gravel I did several years ago. Hengchun features the best preserved old city wall in Taiwan, with four main gates still intact that are just off the main highway, so it’s worth a stop if that interests you.
You’ll also find two reproductions of historical houses belonging to the Neolithic Beinan people and some information about their daily life. The exhibitions change regularly and a walking track has been built outside. During summer, the place hosts a craft market and regular events, especially concerts. It’s one of Taitung’s most popular attractions and a local hang-out spot. The fifth and last park on my list, Peinandazhen Riverside Park is a small park with not much to offer apart from a nice view over the surrounding mountains. Friday, Saturday and Sunday on Zhengqi and Bo’ai roads, this market is a great spot to grab souvenirs, try authentic Taiwanese food and get to know the local way of life.
